If you’re using a GLP-1 medication for weight management, you may have recently learned that your insurance coverage will end on January 1, 2026. We know how unsettling that news can feel.
At knownwell, we want you to know that you won’t have to navigate this transition on your own. Our clinicians, registered dietitians, and care team are here to help you understand your options and create a plan that supports your goals, whether that includes continuing medication or transitioning to an alternative.
There are safe, effective options
Our clinicians and care teams have deep expertise across the full spectrum of obesity medications. We combine this expertise with creative problem-solving to build personalized, practical treatment plans that fit your goals, lifestyle, and budget.
Below are some of the alternative medication options your knownwell clinician may explore together to find what works best for you.
| Medication |
Description |
| Self-pay for GLP-1s |
Self-pay options are available for both Wegovy and Zepbound through the manufacturer. Wegovy plans are $499 per month, while Zepbound’s initial dose costs $349 per month. All higher doses remain at a fixed cost of $499. Pricing may change per the discretion of the manufacturer. |
| Phentermine (Lomaira, Fastin, Adipex) |
Effective appetite suppressant and can be used as an alternative for those who cannot tolerate GLP medications. Not recommended with certain conditions such as heart disease, seizure disorders, glaucoma, or history of substance use. Phentermine can only be prescribed if seen in-clinic. |
| Topiramate (Topamax®) |
Reduces food cravings and may even curb soda intake. Beneficial for patients with migraines, seizure disorders, or binge eating. Requires effective contraception for women of childbearing potential. |
| Bupropion/Naltrexone (Contrave®) |
Reduces appetite and increases satiety. Has added benefits for those with depression, alcohol or nicotine dependence, binge eating disorder, or opioid misuse. Not recommended in patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure or a history of seizures. |
| Phentermine/Topiramate (Qsymia®) |
Combines two common weight loss medications for enhanced appetite suppression and craving control. See sections on phentermine and topiramate for specific considerations. Qsymia® can only be prescribed if seen in-clinic. |
| Metformin |
Frequently used in patients with diabetes, pre-diabetes, PCOS, or fatty liver disease, but also has appetite suppression and weight loss properties. Safe to use while breastfeeding and cost-effective compared to other medications. |
